Minimum CGPA to Graduate in Pakistan: The Clear Truth About Probation (2026)

Minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan is 2.00 out of 4.00 for a bachelor’s degree under the HEC 4.0 system, and 2.50 for an MS or MPhil. Fall below that line during your degree and you are not failed on the spot. You are placed on academic probation, given a limited number of semesters to recover, and removed from the rolls only if your CGPA doesn’t move.

This guide shows exactly where those lines sit, what probation means in practice, and, most usefully, how much you need to score next semester to climb back above 2.00. That last part is the math most students never see, so we’ve worked it out for you. If the terms CGPA and GPA still feel blurry, read our CGPA vs GPA explained guide first.

Minimum CGPA to Graduate in Pakistan: The HEC Rule

The Higher Education Commission’s Undergraduate Education Policy sets the national framework, and each university writes its own semester rules on top of it. For universities on the HEC 4.0 scale, the minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan is consistent across levels:

LevelMinimum CGPA to graduateLowest passing grade per course (common)
Bachelor’s (BS, 4-year)2.00D (1.00)
MS / MPhil2.50C (2.00)
PhD coursework3.00B (3.00)

Read the last column carefully. Passing every course is not the same as graduating. You can clear all 130+ credit hours with D grades and still be refused a degree, because a transcript full of Ds averages well below the minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan. Passing marks also differ by university. At UAF, for example, anything below 40% is a fail, as covered in our UAF grading system guide.

What Academic Probation Actually Means

Probation is a warning status, not an expulsion. Your result is marked, and you keep studying under conditions. Typical conditions at Pakistani universities include:

  • A written warning attached to your semester result
  • A cap on how many credit hours you can register while on probation
  • Pressure to repeat your weakest courses in the next available regular or summer semester
  • A fixed number of probation semesters before you are dropped

The exact numbers differ, and that is where students get caught out. Two published university policies show the range:

  • Information Technology University (ITU), Lahore: undergraduates below 2.00 go on probation. Admission is revoked if CGPA falls below 1.00 in the first year, or below 1.50 from the second year onward. Graduate students go on probation below 2.50.
  • Government College Women University, Sialkot: a student needs 2.00 at the end of each semester for normal promotion. Students between 1.70 and 1.99 (1.50 in the first semester) move up on probation, probation can be used twice, and anyone below those floors is dropped.

So “below 2.00” doesn’t mean the same thing everywhere. A 1.45 in your first year might be survivable at one university and the end of your enrollment at another. The NUST and COMSATS figures we have verified are in our comparison of CGPA requirements across Pakistani universities. For UAF, PU, and others, check your semester rules handbook, your LMS, or your academic office in writing. Don’t rely on a classmate’s memory of the rule.

The Recovery Math: What GPA You Need Next Semester

If you are below the minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan, here’s the truth most advice skips: the later you fall below 2.00, the harder it is to climb back. CGPA is weighted by credit hours, so every completed semester makes your average heavier and slower to move.

Required semester GPA = 2.00 + (credits completed ร— (2.00 โˆ’ current CGPA)) รท credits next semester

The table below assumes you take 15 credit hours next semester and no old grades are replaced through retakes.

Credits completedCGPA 1.60CGPA 1.70CGPA 1.80CGPA 1.90
15 (after semester 1)2.402.302.202.10
30 (after semester 2)2.802.602.402.20
60 (after semester 4)3.603.202.802.40
90 (after semester 6)Not possible in one semester3.803.202.60

Look down any column and the pattern is obvious. A first-semester student at 1.80 needs a 2.20, which is roughly a C+ average. The same 1.80 after six semesters needs a 3.20, a B+ average, from someone who hasn’t been averaging above a C. That’s why the first probation warning is the moment to act, not the third.

Plug in your own credits and target with our target GPA calculator, or test different semester results in advance with the CGPA predictor.

Worked Example: From 1.80 Back to 2.00

Ali has completed 60 credit hours with a CGPA of 1.80. That’s 108 quality points (60 ร— 1.80). He needs 2.00 to stay off the drop list and, eventually, to meet the minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan.

Option 1: new courses only. Taking 15 new credit hours, he needs a 2.80 semester GPA. That’s possible, but it’s a big jump from his current level.

Option 2: one retake plus new courses. Ali has an F in a 3-credit course. If his university replaces the old grade when a course is repeated, retaking it and earning a C (2.00) adds 6 quality points without adding credits: 114 รท 60 = 1.90. With 15 new credits, he now needs (2.00 ร— 75 โˆ’ 114) รท 15 = 2.40 instead of 2.80.

One retake cut the target by 0.40. That’s the most powerful lever a student on probation has, but only if your university replaces repeated grades rather than averaging them. The rules are covered in how retaking a course affects your CGPA.

Retake Strategy: Which Courses to Repeat First

When you can repeat courses, choose by impact, not by which subject you dislike least:

  1. F grades in high-credit courses first. An F in a 4-credit course costs more than an F in a 2-credit one, so replacing it gives the biggest jump in quality points.
  2. D grades in 3โ€“4 credit courses next, if your university allows grade improvement on a D. Some only allow repeating an F.
  3. Courses offered in summer. A summer retake is a lighter load, so you can focus, and it lifts your CGPA before the next regular semester begins.
  4. Don’t overload. Students on probation who register 18โ€“21 credit hours to “catch up” often lower their GPA further. Fewer courses done well beat more courses done badly.

A quick way to prioritise: multiply each course’s credit hours by the grade-point gain you can realistically expect. For example, 3 credits ร— (F to C) = 6 points. Retake the highest number first.

Minimum CGPA to Graduate for MS and MPhil

The bar rises at postgraduate level. For MS and MPhil, the minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan is 2.50, and probation usually begins below 2.50, not 2.00. Many universities also treat C as the lowest passing grade, so a D doesn’t count as a pass at all. Because MS coursework is short (often around 30 credit hours), one bad semester moves your CGPA a lot. That cuts both ways: it’s easier to fall, and easier to recover.

Graduation thresholds are separate from admission and funding cutoffs. If you’re planning further study, check the minimum CGPA for HEC scholarships as well.

What to Do This Week If You’re on Probation

  • Pull your official result from your LMS and note your exact CGPA and completed credit hours. Don’t calculate from memory.
  • Find your university’s probation rules in writing: how many probation semesters you get, the drop floor, and whether retakes replace grades.
  • Run your numbers in the CGPA calculator and fix one target semester GPA.
  • Meet your advisor or programme coordinator with that number and a short list of courses to retake.
  • Register a load you can actually handle, and use our guide to improving your CGPA for study habits that hold up through the semester.

Knowing the minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan is the easy part. The students who recover are the ones who turn it into one concrete semester target early.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan?

The minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan for a bachelor’s degree on the HEC 4.0 scale is 2.00. For an MS or MPhil it is 2.50, and PhD coursework commonly requires 3.00.

Can I get my degree with a CGPA of 1.90?

No. A 1.90 is below the minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan. Even if you have passed every course, you must raise your CGPA to 2.00 by retaking courses (or taking additional courses where allowed) before the degree is awarded, and within your programme’s maximum duration.

How many times can I be on academic probation?

It depends on your university. Some allow two probation semesters before dropping a student; others set a hard CGPA floor that ends enrollment immediately. Check your semester rules handbook.

Does probation appear on my degree?

Some universities note probation on semester results or the transcript. Once you recover, admissions offices and employers mainly look at your final CGPA.

Is there a time limit to raise my CGPA?

Yes. Every programme has a maximum duration for reaching the minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan. ITU, for example, allows six years for a bachelor’s degree. If you haven’t reached 2.00 by then, your enrollment ends.
