W Grade in University: The Clear Truth About W, I and F Grades and Your CGPA

A W grade in university means you withdrew from a course before the deadline, and at most Pakistani universities it carries no grade points, so it doesn’t enter your GPA or CGPA. That single fact causes a lot of confusion, because W sits on the same result card as I, F, P and audit grades, and each of those behaves differently. Some count. Some don’t. One of them quietly turns into an F if you ignore it.

This guide explains each non-standard grade under the HEC 4.0 system set out in the HEC Undergraduate Education Policy, shows the real CGPA effect with numbers, and gives you a simple rule for deciding whether to withdraw or stay in a course you’re struggling with. If you’re new to how grade points feed into CGPA, start with our CGPA vs GPA explained guide.

What a W Grade in University Means in Pakistan

A W is recorded when you formally drop a course after the add/drop period but before your university’s withdrawal deadline. In practice, this is how it usually works:

  • It stays on your transcript. The course is listed with a W, so anyone reading the transcript can see you started and dropped it.
  • It earns no credit hours. The credits don’t count toward your degree, so a required course has to be taken again later.
  • It has no grade points. A W is left out of both the numerator and denominator of your CGPA calculation.
  • The deadline matters. Withdraw after the deadline, or simply stop attending, and most universities record an F instead.

Rules for a W grade in university differ across Pakistan: withdrawal windows, the maximum number of Ws allowed, and whether a fee is refunded all vary by university. Check the semester rules in your handbook or LMS before you act, and get the withdrawal approved in writing. A W grade in university only protects you if the paperwork is done properly.

The I Grade: Incomplete, With a Deadline

An I (Incomplete) is given when you couldn’t finish the course’s assessments, usually the final exam, for a reason your department accepts, such as illness or a family emergency. It is temporary. You complete the missing work within the period your university allows, and the I is replaced by your actual letter grade.

The risk is what happens if you don’t. At many universities an unresolved I converts to an F automatically once the deadline passes. Students lose grades this way every semester simply by assuming an I will wait for them. If you hold an I, find the exact conversion date and put it in your calendar.

The F Grade: Zero Points, Full Weight

An F is the opposite of a W grade in university. It counts. The course’s credit hours enter your CGPA calculation with zero grade points, which drags your average down harder than any other grade. A 3-credit F adds 3 credit hours to the denominator and nothing to the numerator.

The way out is a retake. Whether the new grade replaces the F or is averaged with it depends on your university’s repeat policy, and that difference is large. We cover it in detail in how retaking a course affects your CGPA. Passing marks also vary: at UAF, for example, anything below 40% is a fail, as explained in our UAF grading system guide.

P, S/U and Audit Courses

Some courses are graded pass/fail instead of with letters. These often include internships, workshops, some non-credit or remedial courses, and thesis progress, depending on the programme.

  • P or S (Pass/Satisfactory): you meet the requirement and usually earn the credit hours, but no grade points are added, so your CGPA doesn’t change.
  • U (Unsatisfactory): you don’t meet the requirement. Whether it is treated like an F in your CGPA depends on your university.
  • Audit: you attend for learning only. No credit, no grade points, no CGPA effect.

Because these rules are set locally, check your credit hour requirements to confirm that pass/fail credits count toward your degree total.

Withdraw or Stay? The Real CGPA Math

Here’s the truth about a W grade in university: it often helps your CGPA more than students expect, and it delays your degree more than they expect too. Let’s see both sides with numbers.

Sara has completed 45 credit hours with a CGPA of 2.40, which is 108 quality points. This semester she is taking five 3-credit courses. In four of them she expects a B (3.00), which is 36 quality points from 12 credits. The fifth course is going badly. Here is her CGPA under each outcome for that course:

Outcome in the 3-credit courseCalculationNew CGPA
W (withdraw)144 รท 572.53
C (2.00)150 รท 602.50
D (1.00)147 รท 602.45
F (0.00)144 รท 602.40

Two things stand out. First, the W beats even a C this semester, because the rest of her semester is strong and any grade below her running average pulls it down. Second, the gap between a W and an F is 0.13, which is a big swing from a single course.

The general rule: a course raises your CGPA only if your grade in it is higher than the average you’d have without it. If you realistically expect a grade below that number, withdrawing protects your CGPA for now.

“For now” is the catch. If the course is required, you’ll take it again, and that future grade will count. A W doesn’t erase the course; it postpones it, and it can push back graduation if the course is only offered once a year or is a prerequisite for others. Model both paths with our CGPA predictor before you decide, and check your current standing in the CGPA calculator.

When a W Grade in University Is the Right Call

  • You’ve missed so much work that a D or F is the realistic outcome, and the withdrawal deadline hasn’t passed.
  • You’re on or near academic probation and one bad grade could push you below your university’s floor. See the minimum CGPA to graduate in Pakistan for those thresholds.
  • Dropping the course lets you rescue the other four, because your workload is the real problem.
  • The course is an elective you can replace with an easier one later.

And when it isn’t: if the course is a prerequisite you need next semester, if you’re near your maximum allowed Ws, if dropping it puts you below the minimum credit load your scholarship requires, or if you could still realistically reach a grade near your current CGPA. For scholarship holders, read the minimum CGPA for HEC scholarships guide before dropping anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a W grade in university affect my CGPA in Pakistan?

At most Pakistani universities, no. A W carries no grade points and is left out of the CGPA calculation, though it stays on your transcript and you earn no credit for the course.

Is a W better than an F?

For your CGPA, yes. A W grade in university is ignored in the calculation, while an F counts at 0.00 grade points. But a W only applies if you withdraw before your university’s deadline; after it, you’ll usually get an F.

What happens if I don’t clear an I grade?

At many universities an unresolved Incomplete converts to an F once the deadline passes. Check your handbook for the exact time limit.

Do employers or universities care about W grades?

One or two Ws rarely matter. A single W grade in university is common and easy to explain. A long pattern of withdrawals can raise questions during admissions or scholarship reviews, so use them deliberately rather than as a habit.

Do pass/fail courses count in CGPA?

Usually not. A P or S grade typically earns credit hours without grade points, so your CGPA stays the same. A U may be treated like an F, depending on your university.
